What is the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade?

The Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade, also known as the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day Parade, is a historic celebration of Irish heritage and the Revolutionary War victory that ousted British troops from Boston on March 17, 1776. Dating back to 1737, the parade is one of the oldest St. Patrick’s Day events in the U.S., now drawing up to a million spectators annually with everything from creative, Irish-themed floats, to bagpipers, tons of food and vendors, and other local festivities.

FAQs About the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade

When is the parade in 2025?

The 2025 parade is set for Sunday, March 16, starting at 11:30 a.m. It’s traditionally held on the Sunday closest to St. Patrick’s Day, so guests get a weekend full of festivities and the parade does not disrupt the weekday happenings.

Where does the parade happen?

The parade winds through South Boston, kicking off at Broadway Station. It follows West Broadway to East Broadway, turns right on P Street, then right onto East 4th Street, looping through K Street, East 5th Street, G Street, Thomas Park, and Telegraph Street, and ends at Dorchester Street near Andrew Square. In total, the parade takes a 3.5-mile route, which makes it easy to see the full lineup at different viewing points for spectators.

What else is there to do on the day of the parade?

Beyond the parade, you can enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day 5K Road Race earlier that morning on West 6th Street, or hit up Irish pubs like L Street Tavern for Guinness and corned beef. Live music and cultural events also pop up across the city.

Are pets welcome at the event?

Pets aren’t officially prohibited, but the massive crowds and loud noises—like bagpipes and cheers—can overwhelm them. If you bring your furry friend, keep them leashed and consider their comfort and well-being amid the chaos.
