Like many cannabis-themed code words, the origin of 710 is hard to track down definitively. Many claim to know the true origin story of the cannabis concentrate holiday, but it’s nearly impossible to verify the original use of the term. That said, tracking the potential origins was long, strange trip.
710 and the Grateful Dead
Like most cannabis codewords and slang, its history is intertwined with the Grateful Dead. The band was prolific for their cannabis use, and they became cannabis icons as far back as the mid-1960’s. The “Grateful Dead House” has become a countercultural mecca in San Francisco at their communal residence and office on 710 Ashbury Street.
The “Dumb Blonde” Joke
710 first appeared on Urban Dictionary in 2007, at least in reference to oil. It refers to a joke in which a blonde enters a body shop, panicked that her “710 cap” had fallen out of her car, unaware she’d read the word “OIL” upside-down. This joke about the 710 cap is likely much older than 2007, and has probably been circulating in mechanic shops and bars for decades. 710 started appearing in cannabis forums in the early 2000’s, but it’s hard to say if that’s the true origin.
TaskRok of Task & Linus
On July 10th, 2011, hip hop artist TaskRok also released an album called “The Movement” under the name Task & Linus. This album featured several references to dabbing, shatter, and cannabis concentrates with songs such as “7:10” and “Boil That Oil.” When asked if TaskRok owns the term, he told The Leaf Online it “belongs to the community now.”
The Growing Popularity of Cannabis Concentrates
As compared to cannabis flower, cannabis concentrates have become popular at a much faster rate. Cannabis concentrates have been used in pharmacology for thousands of years, and cannabis extraction and subsequent use was popular in the fledgling days of the United States. While no single event stands out as the definitive 710 celebration, several events and organizations celebrate the holiday in cannabis-friendly states. These include Boston’s 710 Information Sesh, Arizona’s 710 Degree Cup, Oregon’s Camp Sesh, among countless others.
